Why atonality/over-disso...Very well argued, Jack.

Why atonality/over-dissonance have been so embraced by such a broad spectrum of the establishment is still puzzling to me, though. It seems to be the case right across the creative industries in the 20th century -Brutalist/Modernist/Minimalist architecture is a bricks-and-mortar equivalent. Could there be socio-historical reasons for it?.

Unlike the Schoenburg piece, I found the Ancient Greek discovery beautifully affecting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4128313350896208689.post-14161022051203451372010-02-22T10:32:50.813-08:002010-02-22T10:32:50.813-08:00I think this is very important, Jack. Music, along...I think this is very important, Jack. Music, along with art and poetry, fell into the hands of academics--Schoenberg's intellectual decision the change things, to break out, was eagerly taken up by people who "thought" about art, rather than seeking for imagination, as you point out. But, as you say again, the audiences never fell for it. I like also that you mention funding--so many grant-seekers, individuals and institutions--have produced what is so-called cutting edge, shocking, new, in order to be funded, and thereby sanctioned.

I believe the internet is doing a lot to erode that trend. People respond overwhelmingly to beautiful, meaningful music like yours, and I think there are so many young composers and musicians out there who will read this article with a sigh of relief!
I'm happy there is still more to come!Mary Raehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06404181968358309344noreply@blogger.com
